Picture Book Offers Lots for Kids to Think About

Elves in the Bookhouse is a puzzle of a children's picture book... about a group of Elves who take over a curbside library (aka a bookhouse) - or do they? Are they there, at all?

No Elf is ever seen exactly and the question of whether the Elves exist or not... becomes something a little girl named Raye (aka the heroine) and Tummy (her pet cat) don't quite agree on.

They must decide for themselves each day as they replace the books removed by the neighborhood's children.

Clues are evident - but circumstantial - so, how should they be interpreted?

And with what consequences?

They children you read to... will, likewise, have to draw their own conclusions. As the story ends, be sure to ask what they think and why.

It's the best part of the book.

Intended for boys and girls, ages 3 to 8.

Ryan studied creative writing at Princeton under Jerzy Kosinski and Anthony Burgess and was, for a decade thereafter, the proprietor of Austin, Texas-based Cold Mountain Press, a small press publisher of signed, limited editions.

Elves in the Bookhouse is Ryan's first children's picture book. But remember: it's not about Elves. It's about whether they exist or not.
